Description

Sweetly scented flowers drift across the glossy evergreen foliage of this exceptional shrub. This rounded Pittosporum remains coated in green leathery leaves regardless of the season. Far more compact than other varieties, 'Nanum' remains manageable as it grows, without exceeding a height of around 1m.

Just wait until that sweet spot around the tail end of spring and the start of summer, when days are notably lengthening and warming up - this shrub erupts with beauty, as creamy flowers gather in clusters, releasing a honey-like aroma that sits on the breeze. The flowers even evolve across the weeks, taking on a soft yellow tinge.

This Asian native is best grown in a greenhouse border or container, so it can be given winter protection. The thick foliage even makes it perfect for topiary clipping.

Supplied as an established plant in an 18cm pot, already 40-55cm tall, ready to plant.

Top Tips

Prune in mid-spring. Take a close look at the outline of the foliage and remove any vigorous shoots that are starting to sprout out.

Care Information
  • Nursery pot-grown Pittosporum can be planted at any time of the year, but best in either autumn or spring. Always avoid planting when ground conditions are frozen or waterlogged.
  • Plant in either full sun or partial shade, offering shelter from cold winds, thriving in most well-drained soil conditions.

To plant:

  • Dig a planting hole three times wider than the roots and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill once in place.
  • We've found a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges, tend to grow in a circle around the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.
  • Before planting, soak container-grown nursery plants thoroughly and allow them to drain.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots to help the plant to establish quicker.
  • Place in the hole at the same level as it was supplied in the pot and refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling). Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and then water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.
  • If you're planting into pots, place some old rocks, stones, or gravel in the bottom of the pot for drainage and ballast.
  • Use the best compost you can buy and some sand or grit for drainage.
