Description

Transform your garden into an exotic paradise with the Volcano Palm. This remarkable, hardy palm was first discovered growing on the slopes of Mount Etna, proving its ability to thrive in harsh conditions.

Unlike towering palm varieties, this compact, slow-growing beauty stays neat and manageable, making it an effortless statement plant for any space.

There's something undeniably cool about growing your own palm tree, and the Volcano Palm delivers tropical vibes without the hassle. It laughs in the face of the British weather - withstanding temperatures as low as -10C - while its lush, fan-shaped fronds create a striking, architectural display.

Low maintenance, this variety loves a sunny or partially shaded position, requires very little watering, and doesn’t demand a complex feeding schedule. Simply plant it, place it, and enjoy it! Whether in a garden border, patio, or balcony, it delivers year-round evergreen structure without overgrowing its space.

Supplied as an established plant in a decorative 22cm red pot, ready to plant or display.

Top Tips

Keep the soil consistently moist during the growing season, from spring to summer. Once established, the Volcano Palm is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from regular watering during prolonged dry spells.

Care Information

Planting Chamaerops:

  • The best time to plant is during the warmer months, from late spring to early autumn, when the risk of frost has passed. However, a containerised plant like this can be planted whenever ground conditions are not frozen or waterlogged.
  • Choose a sunny or partially shaded spot, sheltered from strong winds. While the Volcano Palm tolerates partial shade, it thrives in a sun-soaked position of the garden.
  • Ensure soil conditions are well-draining. If planting in heavy clay or poorly drained soil, improve drainage by incorporating organic matter like compost or well-rotted manure.
  • Prepare a hole twice the width of the 22cm pot and of equal depth. Next, gently remove the palm from its pot, teasing out any circling roots.
  • Gently lower the root ball into the hole, ensuring the top is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with the excavated soil, firming gently around the base. Water thoroughly to settle the soil.

For Growing in a Pot:

  • Select a container at least 30-40cm in diameter with pre-inserted drainage holes.
  • Fill the base of the pot with a layer of gravel or broken pottery to boost drainage.
  • Add a well-draining compost mix, ideally loam-based with added grit.
  • Position the palm in the centre, before filling around the sides with compost and firming in gently.
  • Water well, allowing excess to drain away.

Aftercare:

  • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring and again in midsummer to promote healthy growth.
  • Minimal pruning is required - just remove any dead or damaged leaves at their base to maintain appearance and encourage new growth.
  • While hardy, in colder regions or during severe winters, you may choose to protect the palm by applying a thick mulch around the base to insulate roots.
  • You can also wrap the foliage with horticultural fleece to shield against frost.
  • For those growing in pots, move them to a frost-free location, such as a greenhouse or conservatory, where possible.
