Description

Classic cottage garden perennials with massive flowers, each with a characteristic black central splotch. Low maintenance and easy to grow. Be bold and plant these three randomly in the garden or if you prefer to see what colour they flower, grow in 15cm pots for the first few months, and see what shades you get before planting in final pride of place.

Tough and hardy, these robust perennials retreat underground in winter, before emerging with bigger and better displays for many years to come. Once spent, the flowers are followed by statuesque seed heads, which add garden interest into winter.

Supplied as three bare roots, grade 1. Ready to plant, please note, exact varieties cannot be guaranteed and may change.

Top Tips
Untidy leaves can be cut back after flowering to stimulate now, fresh foliage.
Care Information

What to do on arrival:

  • Once your Oriental Poppy bare roots arrive, unpack them immediately and check they're healthy and firm.
  • The roots may look dry, but don’t worry - this is normal. Soak them in a bowl of lukewarm water for 1–2 hours to rehydrate before planting.
  • If you can't plant right away, store them in a cool, frost-free place and keep the roots lightly moist, but not wet, in their packaging to avoid drying out.

How to plant:

  • Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-drained soil - Oriental poppies don't like to sit in wet soil over winter.
  • Improve drainage and fertility by digging in some compost or well-rotted manure before planting.
  • Dig a hole deep and wide enough to comfortably fit the root system.
  • Plant the root with the crown (where the shoots emerge) about 3cm below the soil surface.
  • Fill in the hole gently but firmly, and water well to settle the soil.
  • You can also plant into pots using a loam-based compost, ensuring drainage holes are clear.

Aftercare Advice:

  • Keep newly planted poppies well-watered until established.
  • Give plants a dressing of Fish, Blood and Bone in the autumn.
  • Provide support before the flowers appear.
  • Mulch with well-rotted manure or compost in autumn and keep well-watered.

Pruning Advice:

  • Cut back to ground level after flowering.
  • Lift and divide large clumps in autumn.
  • If cut back after flowering, they may even produce a second flush.
