Description

Reliable garden colour across the year, these dramatic grass-like sedges thrive in all manner of garden scenarios, pots or beds, come rain or shine.

Sedges boast ornate strappy leaves, rising and arching from a central clump, very similar in nature and appearance to ornamental grasses. Introduce variegated colour to your garden with this trio of Carex ‘Everest’, ‘Everillo’, and ‘Eversheen’, featuring leaves in scaling shades of green, and even vibrant yellow.

Plus, summer brings brown flowers, which rise high from the plants. These hardy and dwarf natured varieties are suitable for a host of planting schemes, including containers, beds, and borders.

Supplied as a set of three established plants in 9cm pots, including one each of the following:

  • Carex ‘Everest’ – Beautiful variegated leaves emerge on this sedge. Rich green leaves, edged and striped in white.
  • Carex ‘Everillo’ – Vibrant yellow strappy leaves emerge from a central clump of foliage on ‘Everillo’. Young leaves are initially lime green, before evolving across the growing season to take on a yellow glow.
  • Carex ‘Eversheen’ – Big and impressive leaves, each variegated with lime green centres and bordered in darker shades of green.
Top Tips
Each winter, comb through the foliage of these sedges to remove any foliage that has died, before snipping away any leaves in early summer. This will help to encourage fresh growth.
Care Information
  • Dig planting holes three times the width of the existing roots on each variety and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the holes and use this to re-fill once in place.
  • We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges, tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole, whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.
  • Before planting, soak the container-grown plants thoroughly and allow them to drain.
  • Remove the plants from each pot and tease out a few roots.
  • Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help the plants to establish quicker.
  • Place each in the holes to the same level as they were supplied in the nursery pots, refilling the holes with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root balls, before watering well.
  • Mulch around the plant bases with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.
  • If you're planting into pots, place some old rocks, stones, or gravel in the bottom of the pot for drainage and ballast.
  • Use the best compost you can buy and include some sand or grit to boost drainage.
