Description

A beautiful variety of the popular Wallich’s Wood Fern, 'Jurassic Gold' is a fabulous new, British-bred fern that's sure to become a garden favourite with its rose-tinted new growth that turn gold and then green as it ages.

Winner of the 2019 Best Ornamental Plant Introduction at the Four Oaks Trade Show, Jurassic Gold was praised for its unusual ornamental leaves, which emerge bright golden orange with rosy tints.

Hardy ferns are a hidden gem of the gardening world and should be grown much more widely. Graceful and airy, Dryopteris wallichiana is totally winter-hardy and its rose-gold fronds will really stand out in your garden.

One of the best ferns to grow, Wallich’s Fern (also called the Alpine Wood Fern) will reward you with colourful, semi-evergreen fronds that look much like a shuttlecock, and is perfect in a small fernery, in the flower border or in a large pot, or even in mixed planters.

They prefer cool, fertile soil that doesn't dry out and are best in light shade where their colours really shine.

Grow with evergreen ferns and other woodland plants for a striking, designer-style effect that will really draw attention to your garden.

Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot ready for planting out, will grow to H60cm (24in) x W45cm (18in).

Top Tips
  • Plant with hostas and other shade loving perennials.
  • Don't be afraid to plant in dry shade either, just make sure it's kept well-watered.
Care Information

Planting Advice for Dryopteris wallichiana 'Jurassic Gold':

  • Before planting, prepare the soil by digging over and removing any weeds. Incorporate some well-rotted manure or pine mulch to enrich the soil if necessary, as ferns enjoy a rich, fertile soil.
  • When planting a number of ferns arrange them on the surface so you can see how they will look before planting.
  • Individually knock out each plant from its container. Look at the roots – if they are circling around the compost, it is best to tease them out. To do this, push your fingers into the root ball along the bottom edge and pull. Do this in a couple of places. This should encourage the roots to spread into the surrounding soil.
  • Next use a trowel or spade to create a hole just deep and wide enough to set in the root ball - the aim is to bury just the roots, leaving the crown of the fern above ground.
  • Firm back around the soil, using your hand for small clumps and your heel on larger areas.
  • Water in well from below the fronds to settle the soil and prevent desiccation.

Aftercare advice for Wallich’s Wood Fern:

  • Low maintenance and easy to grow, just feed and water ferns regularly from below the fronds until they are fully established.
  • In spring, after tidying, add a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost around the crown of each plant.

Pruning Advice for Dryopteris wallichiana:

  • Little pruning is needed and don't cut back ferns in the autumn - leave the fronds as protection for the crowns of the plants.
  • Clean up old, dead fronds in the early spring before the new fronds uncurl. Clear away any debris to encourage good air circulation.
