Description
‘Winter Beauty’ is an extraordinary clematis that’s extremely popular, and for very good reason. Coming into flower in the depths of winter, it is loved by gardeners for bringing delightful winter cheer to the garden, so much appreciated during the coldest, darkest time of year. This beautiful climber is evergreen, with glossy dark green foliage meaning it looks good throughout the year. However, it’s in December that it begins to put on the show for which it is so admired. Small, bell-shaped flowers emerge in clusters, gently nodding downwards. Opening one by one from pale green buds, they have a waxy look and are pure white with petals that are swept backwards at the tips. What’s more, they carry a wonderful, delicate and sweet fragrance that will drift through the winter air.A hardy and robust clematis, it will grow best in well drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded spot, sheltered from wind. Ideal for planting in borders or in pots, grow it where you can appreciate its sublime scent and beautiful flowers. It’ll grow large enough to cover pergolas, trellises and obelisks but won’t take over your garden. Supplied as an established plant in a 9 cm pot so no need for clematis seeds, ready to plant, growing to a height and spread of 3 m (1 ft).
Top Tips
  • Plant with the crown of the plant 5-8cm deep to encourage new shoots to grow from below ground level. Clematis like a cool ‘root run’ so try and plant so that the roots are shaded. If you are planting in a sunny position, place some pieces of slate or flat stones on the soil after planting or use groundcover plants to keep the roots cool.
Care Information
  • Feed in spring with a general-purpose feed, avoiding the stems. Mulch immediately afterwards with organic matter such as well-rotted manure, leafmould or garden compost.
  • Water regularly during periods of dry weather in the first few seasons after planting, especially for container plants.
  • Clematis in pots should be given a liquid feed through the summer and early autumn.
  • ‘Winter Beauty’ flowers on the previous season’s growth and although no routine pruning is required, any pruning should be carried out in spring or summer after flowering has finished, so that it can grow new shoots that will carry next season’s flowers.
  • We recommend cutting your clematis back to 30 cm (1 ft) the first spring after planting to encourage multiple stems which can then be tied it to create the framework for future growth.
